I’m Mat — a family photographer based in Burlington, about twelve minutes from Winchester center. I’ve been photographing families around Winchester and the Mystic Lakes for years, and most of those sessions happen down at Shannon Beach.
My sessions are candid and shot entirely in natural light. No forced lineups and no “everybody say cheese” — I follow your kids around and photograph what actually happens. Sessions start at $599 with every edited image included, and your gallery is delivered within seven days.
Winchester weekends in September and October book out first. If you want fall colour at the Fells or golden hour at the lake, reach out early.
Where to shoot
The best spots for family photos in Winchester
Shannon Beach, Upper Mystic Lake
The spot I shoot most Winchester families. A wide, quiet stretch of shoreline with soft light coming off the water and open sand where kids can run instead of standing still. Best about an hour before sunset. Parking is right at the beach off Mystic Valley Parkway, so you are never far from the car with a toddler.
Winchester Town Common & Mill Pond
Right in the middle of town, five minutes from most Winchester homes. Big shade trees, the pond, and the steeple behind you. My pick for short sessions with very small children, or when you want photos that look unmistakably like Winchester.
Wright-Locke Farm
Open fields, a nineteenth-century barn and a pond on Ridge Street, with lovely morning light in early summer. It is popular, so I book it early in the day or on a weekday evening, and check ahead about farm events.
Middlesex Fells Reservation
The Winchester side of the Fells gives you real woods within ten minutes of town — moss, stone, tall pines, and from late September the best fall colour anywhere near Winchester. Best for families with kids who like to walk.
Manchester Field
Wide open playing fields with a treeline edge and long, unobstructed golden-hour light. Easy parking, room for big extended-family groups, and almost nobody there on a weekday evening.
Your own home
Some of my favourite Winchester sessions never leave the house. Newborns, toddlers, pancakes on a Saturday morning — natural light through your own windows, and nobody has to get everyone into the car.

Do you travel to Winchester?
Yes. I’m based in Burlington, roughly twelve minutes from Winchester center, and there is no travel fee anywhere in town.
When is the best time of year for family photos in Winchester?
Late September through the third week of October is busiest for a reason — the Fells and Wright-Locke turn first. May and early June are quieter and just as pretty. Whatever the month, I shoot in the hour before sunset.
Where do most of your Winchester sessions happen?
Shannon Beach, on Upper Mystic Lake. The light off the water is soft, there is space for kids to move, and parking is steps away.
Do we need a permit?
For a small family session in a public park you generally don’t. A few spots — Wright-Locke Farm in particular — prefer you check in first, and I take care of that once we pick a location.
What should we wear?
Soft, muted colours that don’t compete with each other, and clothes your kids can actually move in. I send a short guide with real examples once your date is booked.
How far in advance should we book?
Fall weekends usually go six to eight weeks out. The rest of the year, two to three weeks is normally fine.
